Ronald Winans was born the second of 10 children to David and Delores Winans.

They were discovered by Grammy-winning gospel singer Andrae Crouch when they were performing as a gospel quartet, which led them to being produced by Crouch for their first album in 1981 titled, "Introducing The Winans." The Winans gained fame singing religious songs, but their music was tinged with the sounds of contemporary R&B, which annoyed some gospel traditionalists.
