Movie review of Stutterer (2015) by The Critical Movie Critics | A man with a cruel speech impediment must face his biggest fears. I’ve seen this film before and so really like it! Stutterer is a short drama film written and directed by Benjamin Cleary and produced by Serena Armitage and Shan Christopher Ogilvie.

With that, Stutterer becomes a beautiful little romance, and actually has the weight and potential to turn into a charming, full-length feature similar to Shawn Christensen's Oscar-winning short Curfew and its eventually evolution into the terrific film Before I Disappear in 2013. It used to be bad. The short revolves around a lonely typographer named Greenwood (Matthew Needham), who has struggled with enunciation and basic communication all his life due to his stammer, to the point where it's easier to use sign language than to even try to muster up the strength to communicate - let alone have the other party be patient enough to hear him out. Luckily!! (I’m honestly so passionate about this becoming a thing, I might try to write a draft of the script myself!

I personally expected her to be a stutterer too or him being able like a miracle to suddenly speak normal when talking to her because it comes so easy. He's isolated by his inability to communicate normally. I also think the story is interesting and I liked that it shone light on speech impediments like a stutter! When she surprises him with a request to meet up, his safe little prison he's built for himself is suddenly thrown off kilter. It's a poignant story of a young man struggling with a severe stutter. For a 13 minute short film, it took surprisingly long to get going.

Ironically, he's a typographer who lives in a world -- both internal and external -- of words.

Touching and easy to digest is what the Academy voters tend to prefer … oh yeah, and something without subtitles.Stutterer does bring up some interesting points about how we communicate in this modern era, and sometimes non-verbal communication paints the most honest picture of who we are.Might be giving it a slightly higher rating than I should, but I'm really trying not to care, because for a short film, I found it very, very touching. This overt plot line at first appears to be the only plot line, yet this explanation fails to account for several aspects of the film that revolve around Greenwood's disability.
