Instituted by the United Nations in an attempt to curb Earth’s overpopulation, the so-called “baby tax” is prohibitively expensive, so it is not unheard of for groups of people to form civil unions or family co-ops where multiple parents share the tax burden (and even DNA) for one child.

Damn. Broadly, Earth’s citizens can be divided into two groups: those with jobs and those on Basic Assistance.

Most new sci fi is ... unscientific, to put it kindly, or just techy stage furniture with soap-opera dialogue and character development. I'm also a few years late. Those with jobs have access to high-quality food and medical care, the ability to purchase land and property, and the right to have children, provided they can afford the license and taxes to do so.

With 30 billion inhabitants, resources are scarce and there are simply not enough jobs for everyone on the planet. Backed by faces familiar and unknown, the cast does an effective job keeping viewers in the moment as the story progresses.

Syfy's new offering presents camera work, atmosphere, and backgrounds reminiscent from greats like Outland and Alien, among other pillars of the genre. Can't wait until next season! I'm also interested by stories that consider the social issues of an alternative world shaped by different forces -- what would happen if, say, people lived on different planets, or if water was scarce, or if you had to live in 0g all your life. The Expanse is not an easy series to start. This is possibly (probably) the best television or even cinematic experience I have ever seen (particularly in the sci-fi realm). The sfx is brilliant and the ship designs look like they've evolved from what we use today. The times had come for societies to revolve around mass welfare and mass freedom enforced through democratic statehood. Nevertheless, there are still sharp divisions among the employed based on just how much money they have.
