Hamilton suspected that he knew the cause of this unexpected silence, and in one letter he reassures Laurens “In spite of Schuylers black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now.” Aside from Hamilton’s hint that he is marrying Schuyler only for appearances sake, what is noteworthy about this passage is that Hamilton references that (in one of the missing letters) Laurens commented that he thinks marriage will “cure” Hamilton.
