Sporadically engaging, Milos Forman's chronicle of American society and culture in the beginning of the twentieth century is too sprawling and dramatically diffuse, though some of the acting is excellent. I'm not saying that it should be swept under the rug, or that the story shouldn't be told. An amazing score by Randy Newman, a great script based on a book, and lovely cinematography. A vivid portrayal of circa 1900 American life, it is a shame that the film is so poor in structure and ill planned.

RAGTIME…Director Milos Forman… Cast Inc… JAMES CAGNEY…Pat O'Brien…Donald O'Connor… This cast is a blast from the past… We film for a few days at Oxford and for me it doesn't get any better than this.
