Fiji’s unemployment rate is sitting on 4.5 per cent according to the 2017 Population and Housing census.Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Youth and Sports, Parveen Bala talked of this while opening the National Job Fair in Suva yesterday.The two-day Fair continues today with a full range of activities and opportunities.Mr Bala said: “The National Employment Policy, in its policy highlights the need to ‘create more opportunities for young people aged 15 to 24 years to follow clear pathways from education to productive employment.”Mr Bala said as a means of meeting our stated targets he is hopeful that events such as the job fair can make a positive impact on the numbers securing employment.“This is in line with Government’s five and twenty year National Development Plan on Inclusive Socio-economic Development to reduce the unemployment rate to below 4 per cent by 2021.The National Employment Policy included the implementation of new job creation initiatives such the Job Fair, to contribute positively towards reducing the unemployment rate to below 4 per cent.“We are all aware that the private sector is the engine room for economic growth. He said they were happy for the interest shown.FMF Foods Limited group human resources manager, Preayant Kumar said they were not expecting the turn out yesterday.Mr Kumar said they just can’t control the number of people who turned up, but they were happy they managed to have time with all of them.
