Arden was born Eu­nice Mary Quedens in Mill Val­ley, Cal­i­for­nia on April 30, 1908 to Charles Peter Que­dens, son of Charles Henry Au­gus­tus and Meta L. (née Dierks) Que­dens, and Lu­cille (née Frank) Que­dens, daugh­ter of Bernard and Louisa (née Mertens) Frank, both of Ger­man de­scent.

At 16, she made her stage debut after quitting school to joined a stock company. According to her 1990 obituary in the Los Angeles Times, Arden even received offers to teach in real schools.
